The PhD Journey (and beyond) (Update September 2022)

What this is about

Goal: Provide a helpful resource for PhD students and early career academics in marketing but also general management disciplines1.

  • In this document, I present a collection of thoughts and tools for the PhD journey (and beyond).
  • Most of this information might best apply to quantitatively-oriented scholar.
  • However, I strived to keep the advice as generalizable as possible.
  • The ideas are fully mine and are based on my experience: take the advice with a grain of salt!
  • Overall, these slides reflect my personal journey. Each PhD journey is unique and customizable.

A short snapshot of my nonlinear academic career (10 years from the start of PhD to Full Professor)

  • 2012: Enrolled into the PhD program in Data Analytics and Statistics at ESSEC Business School, Paris
  • 2013: For my first-year paper I focused on applying statistical methodology to social media data. Submitted the paper in 2014 and got rejected from 8 journals (IJRM, JIM, JBR etc.)
  • 2014: Continued working on social media topics and switched to marketing-focused dissertation in my second/third year for many reasons (catch me in a conference for a story). Thanks to Ashwin Malshe who became my co-co-supervisor. Ended up with a supervisory team of 3 professors.
  • 2015: Went on the job market midway through year 4 -> Got two offers. Given that my PhD was only 4 years long, I had to figure out my path quickly. Looking back, it allowed me to start my first job early.
  • 2016: Graduated and started a job at Nazarbayev University in Astana (Kazakhstan) as Assistant professor of Marketing (the offer had best conditions, but I am not from Kazakhstan if you are wondering).
  • 2017-2018: Published my dissertation articles: 1 in Journal of Marketing (A+) and one in IJMR (A) -> Got an offer from Bocconi University (Italy).
  • 2018-2022: Worked at Bocconi University as Assistant Professor of Marketing (tenure clock). Left in summer of 2022.
  • 2022: Currently Chair (Full Professor) in Marketing Analytics at University of Liverpool School of Management (United Kingdom)

There are three “popular” strategies that academics can foll

1. The generalist (my path):

1. The generalist (my path):

1. The generalist (my path):

I focus on 5-6 topics at a time and work across several fields (Marketing, Management, Accounting, Economics)

  • This is highly entertaining but overly risky strategy (especially for junior scholars)
  • This is not very common (I have seen only a few examples

2. The specialist:

1. The generalist (my path):

1. The generalist (my path):

Another approach is to dive in 1 topic and publish 3-4 top articles to get tenured at a good institution

  • Less risky but maybe less engaging and entertaining
  • Most popular strategy among top schools.

3. The guru-mixer:

In the end, your personality, goals, and situation can determine the choice -> Find your own path.

In the end, your personality, goals, and situation can determine the choice -> Find your own path.

There is also a possible middle-strategy by combining the two above

  • You can transition to this from the 1 and 2

In the end, your personality, goals, and situation can determine the choice -> Find your own path.

In the end, your personality, goals, and situation can determine the choice -> Find your own path.

In the end, your personality, goals, and situation can determine the choice -> Find your own path.
